Back and Hip Pain

Muscle Strain: Straining or pulling the muscles or ligaments in the back or hip can cause pain. This can occur due to improper lifting techniques, sudden movements, or overuse of the muscles.

Herniated Disc: A herniated or slipped disc occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc protrudes through the tougher outer layer, putting pressure on nearby nerves. This can cause pain in the back and may radiate to the hip area.

Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that can affect the spine and hips. It occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of bones wears down over time, resulting in pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.

Sciatica: Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. It is often caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis, and can cause sharp, shooting pain in the back and hip area.

Bursitis: Bursitis is inflammation of the bursae, which are fluid-filled sacs that cushion and lubricate joints. Inflammation of the bursae in the hip (trochanteric bursitis) or the back (iliac crest bursitis) can cause pain in the hip and lower back region.

Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. It commonly occurs with age and can cause back and hip pain, along with symptoms like numbness, tingling, and weakness.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: The sacroiliac joint connects the sacrum (lower part of the spine) to the pelvis. Dysfunction or inflammation of this joint can lead to pain in the lower back and hips.

Muscle Imbalances: Muscle imbalances in the hip and back muscles can cause pain and discomfort. Weak or tight muscles can alter the alignment of the spine and hips, leading to pain and strain.

Fractures or Injuries: Fractures or injuries to the bones, joints, or soft tissues in the back or hip area can cause pain. These injuries may result from accidents, falls, or trauma.

Other Causes: Other factors that can contribute to back and hip pain include conditions like fibromyalgia, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, infections, or referred pain from organs in the abdominal or pelvic region.
